The sequence below describes how a research question can move from an observation record to an interpretation that is useful, bounded and reviewable.
Six stages
Observe: identify the source, acquisition geometry and available metadata. Calibrate: document the processing and sensor characteristics. Model: make assumptions explicit. Reconstruct: estimate only what the evidence can support. Validate: compare against suitable independent references. Interpret: explain the result in the context of the stated question and intended use.
A record at every step
Each stage should leave enough information for a colleague to understand what changed, why it changed and how the result could fail. A commissioned study would agree its methods, outputs and validation plan in advance.
